What can one say about Comfort Quilts! They mean different things to everyone. It could mean a signature, cheer up pillow for someone sick, or special clothing quilt for someone and then their family. As a Registered Nurse, I know comfort helps the soul.
I have made quilts for a young girl and her baby sister, when they lost their mom unexpectedly. I received her clothing, new and used and created two similar quilts with memories quilted into the quilts for the girls. I have used pants from a senior citizen whose husband and sister had past away and a couple of her own pants. She was so happy to have them used in a comfort quilt and out of the box in the garage. I made 6 similar quilts for a family, whose mother died in a nursing home, and this was what was left to inherit. A dress she wore to all 6 children's wedding was included in these quilts.
I will be doing quilts for my family and in-laws in the future. My father-in-law will decide when the time is right to share Grandma's clothing. Only time will tell. I
completed two for our best friend's family. She didn't want to wash his clothing as the smell of her husband still was there. I agreed not to wash it and will leave it up to her. Please let me know how to help with your memories.
Pellon must be applied and ironed to prevent
excessive stretching of all material.
Comfort quilts can include signatures, sayings, photographs and love. I have used all kinds of clothing, t-shirts, silk shirts, blue jeans, heavy/bulky sweaters, sweatshirts and flannel. I will suggest a pattern when I know how many quilts will be made out of how much clothing. Working with clothing is unique and challenging, but among the most rewarding of my quilting experience.
Quilts do not have to be made after someone passes away, they are just as important that the dying know they will be remembered and cuddled in the future. You may even want them to sign it. What about clothing that you have outgrown and were going to give away, why not share it with your family. One of my favorite suggestions to families is to find photographs of your special someone, and make a
photo collage to go with the quilt for each member of the family receiving the quilt. The quilt and the collage will be there for the future generations.
The cost of piecing a quilt is done at $20.00 per hour, and material for backing,
batting, binding, borders and sashing are separate. The labor of quilting and binding are also separate. I will say, piecing more than one quilt at a time goes much faster than one at a time. It is best to calculate and ask how many would like to have quilts done before the clothing gets cut up and sewn. This will prevent hard feelings that are difficult to resolve.
